The Antofagasta Region, whose capital bears the same name, is an area full of riches. Under its starry skies, the clearest on the planet, you can travel different worlds in a single territory.
Much of its surface is made up of the vast and driest desert in the world, the Atacama Desert, which forms various lines through its hills and in the evenings, a festival of colors that is unique on the continent.
The weather is temperate practically throughout the year, mainly in its coastal areas Antofagasta, Taltal, Mejillones, Tocopilla; however, in the communes located inland, María Elena, Calama, San Pedro de Atacama and Ollagüe, the most extreme thermal sensations are enjoyed, being very warm during the day and very cold at night.
Its beaches, tranquil and warm, are enjoyed day and night by visitors, and its waters are the scene for various activities such as fishing, kayaking, bodyboarding, diving and surfing.
Going up from the coast towards the interior, we are finding a mirror towards the past, reaching María Elena, the last active saltpeter in the world, a place that lives in the middle of the pampas and keeps a material and immaterial heritage of great value. At a higher altitude is Calama, a mining commune crossed by the Loa River, the longest in Chile, and in its surroundings there are beautiful valleys, archaeological sites, ancient pictoglyphs in the so-called Alto Loa: here are the towns of Chiu Chiu, Lasana , Caspana, Ayquina, Turi, Taira, among others, where indigenous communities with vast Andean culture (Quechua, Aymara and Likanantay), traditions and a peculiar gastronomy live.
Continuing the journey, the imposing San Pedro de Atacama emerges, where areas of immense beauty are appreciated, such as the Valley of the Moon with the best sunsets in the area, and the best sightings of the stars. Volcanoes, lagoons, geysers, hot springs, pukarás, all with a wide range of tours, activities, adventure sports and complete contact with nature.
Culminating this ascent and after passing through infinite salt flats, Ollagüe appears, a bordering commune with Bolivia, where the vast train journey begins and ends, and where you can also experience the feeling of being at the foot of a volcano.
Everything in one place, the Antofagasta region is what you are looking for to feel peace and tranquility, but also vibrate with flavors, adventure and unique experiences.
